Project Update: Port of Long Beach Fireboat Station

It’s beginning to feel like summer at the Port of Long Beach Fireboat No. 15. A lot of progress has been made to get “Vigilance,” the fireboat operating from this station, into its new home. Just recently, the boat bay crane was assembled while the fire station topped out, commencing the interior build-out. We are excited to continue watching and sharing the progress of this project as it reaches completion next spring.

Our firm was retained by the Port of Long Beach for the design of a new, LEED Gold, Fire Boat Station to accommodate the need for additional fire protection. The Fire Boat Station is a replacement for an existing, undersized station, and will be designed to accommodate 2 landside fire apparatus, as well as the new 128’ long fireboat, “Vigilance.” Other elements of the project include a protective boat basin featuring a floating barrier system, which will include boat ramps, docks, and a breakwater. This project involves extensive collaboration with several stakeholders including the Port, Long Beach Fire Department, Long Beach Police Department, and Harbor Security to instill the purpose of this project by improving emergency management plans and capabilities, applying effective and proven technologies to improve security operations and enhance coordination and collaboration with local, regional, multi-state, and federal agencies.

The project will be LEED Gold certified and incorporate sustainable technologies such as natural ventilation, photovoltaic panels, and high-efficiency lighting. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the United States and this project will ensure that the Port is ready and able to respond to a significant emergency event.
